Flight School Fact...

Wines of South Africa

In a country with a climate so conducive for the production of rich red wines, it may come as a surprise to learn that about 85% of the vineyards are planted with white varieties.  Light whites are preferred in South Africa as a refreshing thirst quencher, rather than complex reds for aging in the bottle.  The balance of red to white varieties are expected to gradually change, especially with the successful production of Bordeaux-style blends and Shiraz.  As for the dominating whites, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are spreading like wildfire!  In some of the cooler areas, they're  turning out some simple but refreshing Loire-style whites.  Some growers are achieving very impressive results with Gewurztraminer, especially in the Paarl region.  The heart of South Africa's wine industry, Stellenbosch is a place of great beauty and culture that's drenched in South African tradition. It's famous for the number of small wineries specializing in red varieties, including many of South Africa's best.  The Stellenbosch Wine Route is perhaps the country's most famous, it includes over 100 cellars - most of which are open to the public.

DeTrafford Straw Wine 2004 (VIN DE PAILLE – CHENIN BLANC)

Stellenbosch, South Africa
Winemaker's notes: The first of its kind in South Africa. It seems like just yesterday we encouraged the Wine and Spirit Board to form this entirely new category “Wine from naturally dried grapes" but this is now our eighth year of production.  Attractive yellow gold colour. Complex marzipan, burnt honey and dusty dried apricot nose.  The palate is sweet and concentrated (though less than usual) with nice acidity and oak tannins to compliment and deliver a long, lingering finish.  This rather more food friendly than the last few vintages. Delicious with biscotti, various cheeses and nuts. Compliments slightly tart fruit desserts and good patés beautifully.  Wine Spectator: 91
